'Government and the Malta Union for Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) have reached an agreement improving the conditions of nurses and midwives, whilst a Memorandum of Understanding has also been signed with the Union Haddiema Maghqudin (UHM) to improve the conditions of paramedics, chemists and scientific officers.
The agreement signed with the MUMN provides for the granting of warrants to nurses. It also seeks to encourage qualified nurses and midwives to return to the public service, who, in such cases, will also be given recognition for the years they worked in the public service before leaving.
Moreover, a mobility scheme is also being created through the agreement, whereby midwives and nurses who have provided services to sick persons for a long period of time and who would like to change the nature of their work would be able to do so.
The premium for midwives and nurses has also been increased, whilst the conditions of work have also been improved. Furthermore, it was also agreed to introduce a performance evaluation system for nurses and midwives in the clinical and managerial levels by the end of 2009.'
