First Malta Seminar on Huntington’s Disease

An informative seminar on Huntington’s Disease will be held at the Caritas main hall (entrance through curia) in Floriana on the 15th and 16th May 2006 from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. Entrance is free but donations will be appreciated.

The aim of this seminar is to create awareness about Huntington Disease in Malta. This is an inherited illness, usually appearing between 30 and 50 years, causing loss of cells in part of the brain, affecting the individual’s thinking, judgment, memory, movement and emotional control. The seminar will include discussions on new research aimed at finding ways to slow the progression of the disease, provide better quality of life, and opening up prospects of finding a cure. It will address specific social and medical problems providing hope and encouragement for affected individuals and their families.

The seminar will also inaugurate the newly established Malta Huntington Association which will continue to provide updated information, address the special needs of affected families, and collaborate with various support and research groups.

Special Guest Speakers at the seminar will be:

  • Jane Paulsen, Professor of Psychiatry, Neurology, Psychology and Neurosciences, University of Iowa, College of Medicine, Iowa, USA
  • Elizabeth Penziner, Senior Research Assistant, Huntington’s Disease Centre of Excellence, University of Iowa College of Medicine.
