Agitation in the Acute Management of Schizophrenia

MedWire - ECP (Madrid, Spain) - March 17, 2007: When a patient with schizophrenia becomes agitated, medical staff and caregivers should prepare themselves for a potentially alarming and threatening situation. However, the therapeutic approach should be to induce a sense of calm rather than just sedate the patient.

Dr. Fernando CaƱas (Hospital Dr R. Lafora, Madrid, Spain) reported that agitation is a frequent symptom associated with schizophrenia, mainly in the acute or impending relapse phases. It can be loosely defined as any inappropriate, excessive motor or verbal activity. It is frightening because it can quickly escalate into very violent behavior.
